Drug-resistant epilepsy: KFSHRC reports more than 2,000 successful procedures using Stereo-EEG
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) operates one of the world’s most active centres for Stereo-Electroencephalography
[datensicherheit.de, 08|27|2025] From Riyadh, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) reports that it has further consolidated its position as one of the world’s most active centres for Stereo-Electroencephalography (Stereo-EEG). With a treatment rate of one to two cases per week, it is the largest centre for epilepsy surgery in the Middle East and plays an important role in providing state-of-the-art solutions for drug-resistant epilepsy. The KFSHRC hereby emphasises its commitment to advancing neuroscience through the use of state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technologies in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy.

KFSHRC “Epilepsy Centre“: Improving seizure localisation and reducing complications
The KFSHRC has introduced Stereo-EEG as a minimally invasive and advanced diagnostic tool
Since 1993, more than 4,000 patients have been treated at the KFSHRC “Epilepsy Centre“ and over 2,000 epilepsy surgeries have been successfully performed on patients who do not respond to medication.
- In the last two years, the Stereo-EEG programme has been introduced as a minimally invasive and advanced diagnostic tool that improves seizure localisation and reduces complications.
This procedure represents a decisive advance in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy – it enables the precise identification of seizure foci and supports tailor-made treatment plans such as targeted resections or neurostimulation implants, “which help many patients to become more independent and improve their quality of life“.
Surgery at the KFSHRC’s “Epilepsy Centre“ aims to restore independence to patients
“The procedure involves placing wafer-thin electrodes through millimetre-sized openings in the skull to precisely locate seizure foci.“ This minimises the risks associated with conventional open surgery and enables treatment strategies that, in most cases, lead to complete seizure control and restore independence to patients.
- This innovative method also reduces long-term healthcare costs by reducing dependence on expensive anti-epileptic drugs with significant side effects and helping patients return to work more quickly and reduce productivity losses.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 50 million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy, with 30 per cent of patients not responding to medication. This condition clearly has a serious impact on the ability to work, drive and cope with everyday tasks, “making surgery the only viable option for restoring quality of life“.
